In collaboration with Montana State University's Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) Program in Microbiology of Low Oxygen Ecosystems, an undergraduate research intern, Emily Patz, investigated the potential for denitrification in the presence of low oxygen. In ten short weeks, Emily enriched a consortium of microorganisms, sequenced their genomes, and characterized the consortium's ability to reduce nitrate and nitrite in the presence of oxygen. Emily presented this work during a poster session at MSU where she discussed her findings with colleagues and other faculty mentors. Fantastic work, Emily!
